For the Daughter Missing Her Dad This Father's Day

If you're missing your dad today, I just want to start by saying this:

I see you.

Father's Day can be a complicated day when the person you want to celebrate is no longer here.

For some people, today will be filled with cookouts, phone calls, cards, and family gatherings.

For you, it may be filled with memories.

It may be filled with longing.

It may be filled with that familiar ache that appears whenever you think about all the moments you wish you could still share.

And if that's where you find yourself today, please know there is nothing wrong with you.

Of course you miss him.

Of course today feels different.

Of course your heart notices his absence.

Love doesn't disappear just because someone is no longer here.

Sometimes I think the hardest part isn't missing the big moments.

It's missing the ordinary ones.

The quick phone call.

The text message.

The chance to tell him something funny that happened.

The chance to ask his opinion about something.

The comfort of knowing he was just a conversation away.

You don't necessarily spend Father's Day wishing for some grand gesture.

You spend it wishing for one more ordinary afternoon.

One more chance to hear his voice.

One more chance to tell him about your life.

One more chance to say, "Dad, guess what happened today?"

And perhaps that's what makes grief so difficult.

It's not only the milestones we miss.

It's the everyday relationship we lost.

Today may also bring mixed emotions.

You may feel sadness.

You may feel gratitude.

You may smile at a memory and cry five minutes later.

You may feel peaceful one moment and heartbroken the next.

You may even find yourself feeling happy for others while simultaneously wishing your own situation were different.

All of those emotions can exist at the same time.

Grief rarely fits neatly into a single feeling.

You do not have to choose between missing him and celebrating the love you shared.

You can do both.

You can be grateful for him and angry that he's gone.

You can smile at old memories and still wish he were here.

You can carry joy and sadness in the same heart.

Many grieving daughters spend Father's Day wondering if they're doing it "right."

Should I stay busy?

Should I visit his grave?

Should I spend time with family?

Should I avoid social media?

Should I celebrate him somehow?

The truth is there is no right way to move through a day like today.

There is only your way.

Maybe you'll look through old photos.

Maybe you'll tell stories about him.

Maybe you'll light a candle.

Maybe you'll spend time with people who understand.

Or maybe you'll simply make it through the day one hour at a time.

Every one of those choices is valid.

You do not owe anyone a performance of strength.

You do not have to hide your grief.

You do not have to explain why today feels hard.

And you do not have to rush yourself through it.

Father's Day can be tender.

It can be emotional.

It can be beautiful.

It can be painful.

Sometimes it's all of those things at once.

So wherever you are today, whatever emotions are showing up, I hope you'll offer yourself the same kindness you would give someone you love.

And if there is one thing I hope you remember, it's this:

Missing your dad today is not a sign that you haven't healed.

It's a sign that you loved him.

And love doesn't follow a calendar.

Even now.

Even today.

Even after all this time.

The love remains.
